Description of location:

Cathedral of Syracuse (Duomo di Siracusa):

    • The Cathedral of Syracuse, formally known as the Cattedrale metropolitana della Natività di Maria Santissima, is an ancient Catholic church located in Syracuse, Sicily.
    • Its origins trace back to prehistory, with the great Greek Temple of Athena built on this site in the 6th century BC. The temple featured Doric columns and was later looted during the time of Cicero.
    • Archaeological excavations revealed that the Greek temple was constructed on even older foundations, and numerous artifacts from that era are now housed in the Museo archeologico regionale Paolo Orsi in Syracuse.
    • The present cathedral was built by Saint Bishop Zosimo of Syracuse in the 7th century. The battered Doric columns from the original temple were incorporated into the walls of the current church.
    • Over time, the cathedral underwent transformations: it was converted into a mosque in 878 and then restored to its Christian purpose when Norman Roger I of Sicily recaptured the city in 1085.
    • The cathedral’s roof and mosaics in the apses have Norman origins, while the façade showcases High Sicilian Baroque style. Notably, the carved Acanthus leaves on the Corinthian columns adorn the entrance.
    • Inside, you’ll find a font with a marble basin dating back to the 12th or 13th century, a ciborium designed by architect Luigi Vanvitelli, and a statue of the Madonna della Neve (“Madonna of the Snow”) by sculptor Antonello Gagini1.

Piazza Duomo (Cathedral Square):

    • The bright square, also known as Piazza del Duomo, is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria delle Colonne.
    • At the entrance of the cathedral, you can still see the Doric columns from the former Greek temple dedicated to Athena.
    • The square’s baroque façade, adorned with splendid decorative features, contributes to making it one of the most beautiful sights in Sicily.
    • Construction of the current cathedral began in 1728, replacing the previous one damaged during the 1693 earthquake.
    • The statues on the façade are the work of the sculptor Ignazio Marabitti23.

In summary, the Syracuse Cathedral is a remarkable blend of historic styles, combining an ancient Greek temple with a Roman-style interior and a stunning baroque façade. Its location on Ortygia Island adds to its allure, making it a must-visit when exploring this captivating city.
